Rachel's Lab C Reflection

Tinikling

Overall Lab C went great for everyone in the class! I was not very pleased with how my teaching went, but I will explain what went well and what I can improve on. I enjoyed Lab C because not only did we get to experience some behavior problems, we got to experience students who had trouble with the skills we taught. If the teacher caught it, we could help the student with the skill he or she was having trouble with. We had a few forms that some of the TA's filled out during our lesson and we filled out our own also when we watched our video of our lesson.

C9 Form:
From the TA C9 form, I received a 13.5/19, which is not great but I will explain why I got that score. My instant activity did not start within 30 seconds, because it took a little longer for me to explain what we were going to be doing and I had to start the music. For future I will have to find a simpler way to explain my instant activities so that I can get the students active right away. I also did not clearly explain my expectations, in a lesson the teacher needs to clearly state their expectations so that the students know what the teacher wants. Since my expectations were not clearly stated, this may have caused the students to not know what I wanted out of this lesson. For my activities, I did not have a lot of equipment but with the equipment I had, I did not have it all ready for the activity. So this took time out of my lesson, and caused some students to stand around. I did not have very many or any at all of check for understanding questions during my lesson. It is important to have these to make sure the students are paying attention and to make sure that the students know what they are doing. Feedback in my lesson was also not used much, if at all. I noticed the students that were struggling with the skills and tried to help them but I did not give really any feedback to students that were doing well. Also I did not command attention of the class, this is because I became nervous about my lesson and what I had planned. I need to command attention of the class because the students need to know who is in charge of the class. My transitions were also weak, I could of had a smoother progression from skill to skill. It is good to have good transitions because this makes the lesson flow better and keeps the class focused and on task. Lastly I wasn't very clear and lacked energy in my lesson. This needs to be improved on because if you have energy and enthusiasm in your lesson then you students will be motivated to learn.

Time Coding:
From the TA time coding sheet, my management time was 40% of the total time of my lesson. This should be less than 15%, this was so high because I spent some time getting the equipment out, and I didn't have fast transitions from activity to activity. This needs to be improved on because students need to have more time spent on other things. Management time is pretty much when the students are just standing around and not learning anything so it is important to keep at a minimum. My activity time was 43% of the lesson which needs to be greater than 50% of the lesson time. I did not reach this goal because of having such a high management percentage and I did not have the students active at all times. I need to improve on this because it is a main goal to have students very active, if students are not active they are just standing around. My instruction and waiting time were both in the right range. I had the students waiting only for 5% of the lesson which is what it should be or less. I wanted to try my best to keep the waiting time low, to try to have a higher activity time. When I completed the time coding sheet, I got that I had the students 42% of the total lesson which is almost what my TA got, so that is accurate. It is still not at what it needed for a good lesson, and can be improved on.

Feedback Analysis:
I completed a feedback analysis sheet when I reviewed my lesson video. What I got from focusing on the feedback I gave is that I barely gave any. The only "feedback" I gave is when I noticed some students struggling with my tasks, I went over to help them. So if I gave any feedback it was corrective, I did not hear myself use any positive feedback. This may have been because I did not know what to give feedback on and may have been thinking on what to do next. Feedback needs to be used because the students need to hear how they are doing. Feedback also connects you with the students and lets them know that you are there to help them really learn.

Lab B to Lab C:
What I believed I improved on was the amount of time the students were active. I also believe that the students had more fun with the overall activity. According to my C9 form my voice was average for this lesson, if I remember correctly my voice for Lab B was weak, so I improved there. I feel like I could of improved so much more in Lab C, so now I have to prove myself in Lab D. This lab compared to Lab B was much more, we had to work as a team and their was more work involved. I think this lab was great because for all of us, it was a whole new activity or game that we have never heard of.

On to Lab D:
A few things I hope to improve on for Lab D are better progressions because to have your lesson flow smoothly, you need to have progressions that build off of each other. This will help the students stay motivated and challenge them each time. I need to have more energy and enthusiasm which will also help the students stay motivated and it can make them want to learn more. I also need to improve on my activity time, to try to reduce my management time, and to eliminate my waiting time. This is important because in physical education, you want your students to be active more then 50% of the lesson. Also I need to have all of my equipment ready to go so that the students can jump right in to each activity. This also has to do with the activity time, if students are waiting for me to fix the equipment then they are most likely just standing around waiting. For Lab D I am teaching Sport Stacking, know what that is?
You will soon find out!
